2018 was a significant year for Philadelphia’s built environment and landscape. Hidden City Philadelphia of CultureTrust aims to connect Philadelphians with the city by highlighting how our built environment shapes Philadelphia’s cultural and social life.
The winners of Hidden City Philadelphia’s Best Architecture, Urban Design, & Public Art of 2018 are all projects that create connections for Philadelphians: past to present, city to nature, and interior to exterior. Several of these projects used GBCA members’ expertise to make these visions into reality:
The National, a re-developed mixed-use building that includes 192 apartments and a gym, has officially opened, welcoming new tenants on November 1. Located at 112 North 2nd Street, the National is one of several new apartment and condominium projects in the neighborhood.

On November 1, 2018, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, Philadelphia Director of Planning and Development Anne Fadullon, NECA Penn-Del-Jersey Chapter Executive Director Jeff Scarpello, IBEW Local 98 Business Manager John Dougherty, JOSS Realty Partners founder Larry Botel, SSH Real Estate partner Pete Soens, National Real Estate Advisors President and CEO Jeffrey Kanne, Mayor Jim Kenney, and Young Capital President Michael Young participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony as part of East Market’s Grand Opening.
