Congratulations to Kayla Brown, from Abington Friends School, who was awarded a 2019 Diversity Advancement Scholarship, worth $20,000 over five years, from the American Institute of Architects (AIA)! Kayla will be starting a degree in Architecture this fall at Drexel University.
GBCA was proud to support Kayla’s Senior Class Project in 2019, for which she built and set up Free Library Boxes in Montgomery County: one at the Bryn Athyn Post Office, and a second one at the Byberry Road Trailhead. Kayla also received a $5,000 Scholarship sponsored by CREW Philadelphia from the ACE Mentor Program of Greater Philadelphia. For the 2018-2019 year, Kayla was a member of Team 15, an All-Female team with JKRP Architects. In addition to regular ACE meetings, Team 15 took a tour of The Met Philly, co-hosted by GBCA Member Smith Flooring, Inc., and members volunteered for 2019’s MLK Day of Service, held by GBCA, ACE Mentor Program of Greater Philadelphia, Clemens Construction Company, and Keystone + Mountain + Lakes Regional Council of Carpenters.
“Being a part of Team 15 with JKRP Architects has been one of my favorite ACE experiences. Thursdays became my favorite day, and not just because of the pizza. I realized the importance of having a female support system on an all-girls team. In a male-dominated field, women need to support one another. My mentors-Black, White, Indian, Asian-became inspiring examples to me in seeing what I could be in the future. ”
Best of luck, Kayla! We hope to see you make an impact on our skyline soon!
