March 7-13, 2021 is Women in Construction Week. We are recognizing some of the women who own and operate construction businesses in the Philadelphia region’s construction industry. These women and their companies are changing the Philadelphia region, both its physical and cultural landscapes.
This week, we’re spotlighting Shannon Martin, Co-Owner of Manna Supply, Inc.
How and why did you pursue a career in construction?
My sister and I grew up surrounded by family members and friends in the construction industry and knew that it was a male dominated industry. I, however, love a good challenge. I want to pave a path for younger women out there, just like myself, and show that although construction isn’t necessarily a “glamorous” industry, it is very rewarding and creates jobs for so many people.
The other week, I was at a Philadelphia Elementary School pre-bid walk through. We met with the principal of the school. She was so grateful that we were putting in new lighting fixtures and new interactive whiteboards and furniture. She teared up and said for as long as she’s been a principal (10+ years), there haven’t been any upgrades in the school. She went on about how much her school kids deserved this and how happy they are going to be. That made me realize what we are doing really matters and makes a difference in people’s lives! I hope to inspire women of the younger generation to take that leap because we need more of us out there.
What do you love about running your construction business?
The construction industry is always booming with new opportunities! I live in South Philadelphia and used to hate when I would see construction going on because normally that would mean more traffic. But now it excites me! I have always been extremely driven and self-motivated. I don’t take “no” for an answer because I know what we are capable of doing. Having your own business allows you to make decisions that you normally couldn’t do if you weren’t an owner. We are our own bosses, and that is something I will never take for granted.
What is one of your favorite past or current projects, and why?
One of my favorite projects was a job we did for Drexel University with a large Mechanical Contractor. This job was one of my first mechanical jobs and was rewarding because I met so many new vendors with whom I now have relationships. I always feel good about working on projects that are going to benefit students in my city.
