OpenAI has announced a partnership with North America’s Building Trades Unions to expand union jobs, strengthen apprenticeship programs, and support workforce development as demand for AI infrastructure accelerates across the U.S.
To meet its projected growth—targeting 10 gigawatts of compute capacity by 2030—OpenAI estimates the need for approximately 20% more skilled tradespeople than currently exist. The partnership includes a $1.5 million investment in training and recruitment efforts, reinforcing the role of union labor in delivering complex, large-scale data center and energy projects.
