The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has updated its National Emphasis Program on Outdoor and Indoor Heat-Related Hazards, effective immediately.
The revised program focuses enforcement, inspections, and outreach on industries and workplaces where heat-related risks are most prevalent. Using updated data, OSHA has identified 55 high-risk industries and will prioritize inspections—particularly on days when heat advisories or warnings are issued. The update also includes improved guidance for evaluating heat safety programs, clearer citation direction, and enhanced tracking to better support compliance and enforcement efforts.
With heat illness continuing to pose serious risks to both indoor and outdoor workers, this update reinforces the importance of proactive planning, training, and jobsite safety measures.
