James X. Clemens began Clemens Construction Company in 1979 with a handful of
employees and a determination to expand his business. Today, Clemens has evolved into one of the most trusted and respected full-service General Contractors in the Northeast. They offer renovation and new building construction services in many different industries including banking, corporate, multi-family, pharmaceutical and historical renovation. With 50+ LEED projects completed to date, Clemens is committed to cost-effective sustainable construction and is at the forefront of “green” construction in the Delaware Valley.

Notable projects include The Friends Center, The Drake, and Main Line Reform Temple, Community Legal Services, Southstar Lofts, 2021 Chestnut Street Apartments, Radisson Blu-Warwick Hotel, 1430 Walnut Street and the Stephen Girard Building. They are currently working on a multi-phase project at 1112-1128 Chestnut Street.

Stephen Pouppirt was named President of Clemens in 1997 and continues to direct the growth of the firm. Steve has more than 30 years in the design and construction industries, he managed the construction of Liberty Place One and Two office towers in Philadelphia just prior to joining Clemens in 1990.

Clemens Construction Company has been awarded two 2015 GBCA Construction Excellence Awards. One award for Best Commercial Project Over $10 Million: 1430 Walnut Street Retail Development and the other award for Best Adaptive Reuse Project: Avenir on Fifteenth Apartments, 15th and Chestnut Streets.  Clemens has also received the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia 2010 Grand Jury Awards for Girard Estate Warehouse and Friends Center as well as the 2014 Grand Jury Award for The Annex at the Touraine.

Steve Pouppirt served as Chairman of the GBCA Board of Directors in 2004 and 2005.
