On January 15, 2018, GBCA, the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, ACE Mentor Program of Eastern PA, Clemens Construction Company, and community volunteers came together for a 2018 Martin Luther King Day of Service project. Meeting at the Francis J. Myers Recreation Center in the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia, we built elevated garden planters to help enhance the nearby Cecil Street Gardens, where the community can learn about, grow, and have access to fresh and healthy food.

Many thanks go to our event partners: ACE Mentor Program of Eastern PA, Clemens Construction Company, Inc., Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson’s Office, Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University, John Heinz at Tinicum, and Empowered CDC. Special thanks go to the students from the ACE Mentor Program and area schools building the planters, and local dignitaries—Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, PA State Senator Anthony Hardy Williams of the 8th District, and State Representative Joanna McClinton of the 191st District.
