GBCA has been working with our labor partners and elected officials to find ways to combat the rampant tax fraud within our industry.

Many construction employers on all types of projects, including taxpayer-funded work, are not properly withholding or paying income or employment taxes for their workers. Most of the fraud comes when workers are paid off-the-books by shady subcontractors and labor brokers, who are hired by contractors to underbid law-abiding businesses. Another strategy behind tax fraud in the construction industry is worker misclassification—classifying employees as independent contractors.

While we are working on solutions to our local issues, The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) has put together information on the issue. It is also holding an event, the Construction Industry Tax Fraud Days of Action, on April 13-15, 2019.
