Each year, The National Association of Women in Construction Philadelphia (NAWIC), PA Chapter 145 sponsors a free camp for local girls in 7th – 12 grade to introduce them to the building trades and the construction industry. In 2016, their efforts were featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer and recognized by Mayor Kenney who attended the Local 98 hands-on class. They have volunteers from all over Philadelphia and the surrounding areas.

Now they are seeking firms and/or individuals to sponsor the camp. We purchase all of the supplies that the girls need for the week. These include tools, boots, safety gear, etc. We transport the girls to and from the various trades and job locations. We provide snacks and lunch for the girls every day.

Here are some comments that NAWIC has received from the girls registering for this year’s camp:

  • “I would like to participate in the 2017 MAGIC Camp to develop fundamentals of the trades field, to meet important female role models, to expand my mindset into a more positive direction, and to practice and take on new challenges without the fear of failing.”

  • “I would like to participate because I like working with my hands.  I want to learn to start working on houses so this will be a good introduction for me.”

  • “As a 9th grader looking for my career path I am interested in seeing what work for all women in the working world is like.”
