Philadelphia, PA, May 19, 2017 . . . Shoemaker Construction Co., part of The Butz Family of Companies, participated in the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce’s 13th Annual Read to Me Early Literacy Storyteller Event benefiting Philadelphia schools.

Six of our team members spent the morning reading to designated classrooms of Philadelphia school children throughout the District.  Shoemaker’s 2017 storytellers included Sara Leon, Kelly Rittenhouse, Rebecca Pasik, Cole Smith, Dennis Donahue, and Maura Hesdon.  Proceeds from the event are used to purchase books for under-resourced Philadelphia School District libraries.  Over the past 13 years, more than 14,200 books have been donated.

The Storyteller event is part of the annual Read to Me Early Literacy Program, which provides classroom book collections to thousands of students.  The program inspires children to read with their parents, caregivers and teachers.  It also provides teacher orientations to train educators on how to effectively utilize the program in their classrooms and encourage family members to read to their children at home.

“We’re proud to support early literacy in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia School District through our sponsorship of the Chamber’s program and our participation as classroom storytellers at this amazing event.  We realize the value of building early reading skills and the importance of encouraging children to develop a love of reading.” said Maura Hesdon, General Manager for Shoemaker Construction Co.

Shoemaker has managed more than 14 construction projects for K-12 and charter schools throughout the Philadelphia area and is currently the construction manager for the School District of Philadelphia’s renovations to the John L. Kinsey Elementary School, which will support a Building 21 program.  Completion is scheduled for August 2017.
