While OSHA provides standards and guidance for hazards directly resulting from specific construction activities and components, workers’ health can also be impacted by characteristics of any construction jobsite.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) has created a guide for safety professionals to help them create safety programs and protocols around four characteristics of construction jobs and jobsites that can become health hazards:

  1. Manual Material Handling
  2. Noise
  3. Air Contaminants
  4. High Temperatures

These four issues may not directly cause “incidents” on the jobsite, but they can impact workers’ physical health, causing issues such as worker fatigue, which could contribute to incidents.
