CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training has released a new resource, Preventing Workplace Harassment & Physical Violence in Construction: A Guide for Employers & Workforce Leaders, designed to help construction employers and industry leaders create safer, more respectful jobsites.
The guide approaches workplace harassment and violence as occupational safety hazards that can be identified, assessed, and addressed through appropriate policies, procedures, and preventive measures. It also emphasizes the importance of addressing harassment, intimidation, bullying, and threatening behavior before situations escalate.
The resource provides practical guidance for construction employers and workforce leaders on conducting workplace violence hazard assessments, identifying potential warning signs, developing written prevention policies, establishing reporting and response procedures, preparing for emergencies, and training workers and supervisors.
The guide also includes recommendations for incorporating harassment and violence prevention into jobsite pre-planning, including evaluating crew dynamics, site security, work schedules, environmental stressors, and other conditions that could increase risk.
Construction employers and workforce leaders can use the guide as a resource for strengthening existing safety programs and fostering a jobsite culture built around care, respect, and worker safety.
