The City of Philadelphia’s Department of Licenses and Inspections has sent a letter to contractors asking them to pay specific and on-going attention to the security of active construction job sites.

We want to make sure GBCA contractors are fully aware of the five primary principles of safety that are outlined in this letter:

  1. Ensure there is a secure perimeter around your site.
  2. Chain down dumpsters and remove combustible debris.
  3. Keep all loose materials secured behind your site perimeter. This includes bricks, blocks, piping, and any other loose material.
  4. Secure scaffolding and sidewalk shelter platforms so they can not be easily disassembled.
  5. Secure all tools and materials to prevent theft.

In addition, Philadelphia Fire Code Chapter 3304 requires a fire watch for all wood frame construction when the height of construction exceeds 40-ft. above curb elevation. At a minimum, the fire watch must consist of a security guard on-site after normal work hours who maintains a surveillance log, prevents unauthorized entry, and can summon the Fire Department in the event of an emergency.
