The American Heart Association created a series of Hard Hats with Heart Toolbox Talks with cardiovascular health tips and resources specifically for the construction industry to keep the workforce healthy. This weeks Toolbox Talk discusses cardiac arrest and how to perform hands-only CPR.

What is a cardiac arrest?

A cardiac arrest happens when someone’s heart malfunctions and stops beating unexpectedly. During cardiac arrest, a person becomes unresponsive, stops breathing, and may have only moments to life if they don’t receive immediate CPR. Nearly ¾ of cardiac arrest occur in the home, so it’s likely the life you save will be that of a loved one.

How to save a life through Hands-Only CPR

Cardiac arrest can be reversible in some victims if it’s treated within a few minutes.

  • First, call 9-1-1 and start CPR right away.
  • Then, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible.
  • If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls your local emergency number and finds an AED.
