On May 11, 2021, GBCA, the Building Trades Council of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania & Vicinity (BTC), the Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (EASRCC), and Gilbane Building Company held a Safety Stand Down at the site of a new K-8 school project in Northeast Philadelphia to raise awareness about substance abuse and mental health issues in construction.

We shared toolbox talks created in conjunction with the EASRCC and BTC covering alcohol abuse, suicide, empathy, and substance abuse to help facilitate these tough conversations in the workplace. These mobile-friendly toolbox talks are available in GBCA’s Toolbox Talk Toolkit:

We also gave out high visibility shirts and hard hat stickers featuring a QR code leading directly to the substance abuse and mental health toolbox talks.

Speaking at yesterday’s event were,

  • Jim Carpenter, Operations Manager, Gilbane Building Company
  • Butch Bennett, Business Agent, BTC
  • James Hocker, Senior Council Representative, EASRCC
  • Lauren Hanan, Director, Marketing & Communications, GBCA

This Safety Stand Down was held in support of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Prevention Week (May 9-15, 2021), a public education platform promoting resources to help individuals and communities become aware of substance abuse and mental health issues.
