Belcher’s Safety Department, led by Bill Reis, recently launched a new Safety Campaign that has already proven to be highly successful. The campaign is based on the concept of “I Pledge…” It encourages the men and women on the job to pledge to be safe. The message varies – from pledging to wear safety glasses, to looking out for one another.

So we asked Bill, himself, to describe the campaign:

What is the thinking behind the campaign?

“We wanted to try something different. Safety First was a great slogan for the time, but we felt it was time for a change. So we got together with the safety committee, and that’s where the Pledge came from. The idea is a way to remind the members that they’ve got each other’s backs and they pledge to look out for each other.”

Explain the process of informing your staff.

“The staff and membership became informed by word-of-mouth. The safety committee was so excited to be involved with a new campaign that they spread the word instantly.”

How do you encourage the guys to wear their shirts?

“It doesn’t take much encouragement. The members are proud to wear the shirts; they want to be involved in safety.”

What is the result?

“Results were great. The men and women on job sites, and even other trades, have commented on how much they like the pledge. It’s something different; it’s new and fresh.

What are the different messages included?

1. The Pledge to be my brother’s keeper is first, and that will be the campaign’s main statement or objective

2. The next Pledge will be to wear safety glasses

3. Pledge to wear and inspect my PFAS ( Harness)

4. Use a GFCI and inspect extension cords

5. Wear my hard hat

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
“On another note none of this is possible without the support of Tom and Kevin Belcher. They have never said no to anything; including buying shirts/ jackets / hoodies/ employee events and all the safety equipment we use on site. Their commitment should be commended.”

As it turns out, Tom and Kevin Belcher’s commitment has been noticed. On October 30, 2017, at the GOSH  (Governor’s Occupational Safety & Health Conference), Belcher Roofing Corporation will present a video they’ve produced. The video will include their commitment to safety, among many other things.

“We have always been a proud member of the GBCA and we are looking forward to a strong relationship as we continue to build our business on a firm principle of SAFETY-QUALITY-PRODUCTION.”
