A new workforce development program in North Philadelphia is providing free, hands-on training to help residents prepare for careers in the skilled trades. The initiative is a partnership between Esperanza, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, and the Tec Centro Workforce Network.

Located at Esperanza’s headquarters at North 5th and West Bristol Streets, the 14,000-square-foot training center offers programs in welding and metal fabrication, HVAC, plumbing, and facility maintenance technology. Each six-month training program accommodates 12 students and focuses on preparing unemployed and underemployed individuals for in-demand careers.

The facility includes welding stations, a computer lab, and a drafting room, providing students with opportunities to develop technical skills and gain practical experience. The program also connects participants with potential employers, helping create pathways to long-term employment.

The initiative addresses the growing need for skilled workers in the Philadelphia region while expanding access to career training. By connecting education with workforce opportunities, the program aims to help residents enter the trades and support the region’s skilled workforce.

The first group of students began training in July and is expected to complete the program in December. The center also offers adult education, English as a Second Language (ESL), and GED preparation.

Adults ages 18 and older in the Philadelphia area can learn more about eligibility and enrollment at Esperanza Tec Centro Philadelphia.
