In 2018, GBCA is partnering with the Philadelphia Business Journal (PBJ) to showcase Philadelphia’s construction industry. This ever-expanding relationship is allowing us to produce editorial content about issues in construction, and how GBCA and its membership are addressing them.
So far, we’ve produced two articles, which appear on the main Professional Services page of the PBJ’s website. We also have banner ads placed on the page (see in above image).
The first article focuses on the need for a Culture of Safety in construction. The second looks at Education and Workforce Development in the industry, and how industry members are working to build a strong workforce. Here’s a preview, with links to the full articles!
Construction organizations need strong leaders to create a culture of safety
In today’s competitive construction market, we need leaders that build sustainable cultures where safety and health are woven seamlessly into the fabric of the organization alongside efficiency, quality, and productivity. Each year, accidents on the worksite pull from the contractor’s bottom line; the direct cost of accidents are found in insurance premiums, deductibles, and direct payments. Safety has always been an integral part of the construction industry, and today it has evolved into a resource for competitive organizations to become more efficient while simultaneously becoming a cost reducing tool.
Building a strong construction workforce with continuing education and mentoring programs is GBCA goal
The construction profession is one of the fastest-growing career options nationwide. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction is projected to add more than 1.6 million jobs, increasing to a total of nearly 7.3 million jobs by 2022, with employment growing at an annual rate of 2.6 percent between 2012 and 2022. Construction technology and techniques are constantly evolving, and proper training is crucial to building a successful career in the industry. Since 1961, the General Building Contractors Association (GBCA) in the Philadelphia region helps provide construction industry professionals with the needed skills and education to succeed through its workforce development initiatives.
