Philadelphia’s Walnut Street Theatre has unveiled its $39 million expansion plan, set to begin groundbreaking in spring 2020 with a completion date scheduled for 2022. The project will be built by INTECH Construction.

The centerpiece of the 36,000 square-foot expansion project is a 400-seat-theatre in the round, which will be the first of its kind in the region. The project also includes a fully renovated lobby and box office, a restaurant open to the public.

“For over two centuries the Walnut has adapted to the needs of its community,” states Walnut Street’s president and producing artistic director Bernard Havard. “This is the latest re-invention of the theatre that so many in the Greater Philadelphia area call home, and guarantees that generations to come will also be able to make the Walnut their theatre home.”

The capital expansion will also convert former rehearsal halls into dedicated education spaces, as well as create three new dedicated classrooms.
