For Women in Construction Week, March 5-11, 2023, we are recognizing some of the women working on project teams in the Philadelphia region’s construction industry. These women and their companies are changing the Philadelphia region, both its physical and cultural landscapes.

This week, we’re spotlighting women from Healy Long & Jevin, Inc.

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

The construction world is not monotonous and it changes at a fast pace, daily sometimes hourly. I must walk into work and be on top of my game each day to keep up with it. I love working at a fast pace and adapting to the challenges of the changes.

Do not be afraid to put yourself out there and ask questions. I am still new to the industry, and I have found that asking questions and putting yourself out there makes the job easier and more enjoyable. It’s definitely a learning experience and I’m very eager to see what all I can learn!

Colleen McCann, Project Manager

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

The one thing I love about working in the construction industry is building something that becomes a permanent part of the Philadelphia skyline. It’s something tangible that impacts the life of the city for generations to come. As an onsite project manager there is no better feeling than participating in the daily progress of the job and being part of the team. Regardless of your role in the process, everyone plays an important part in getting the job done, resulting in something permanent and lasting.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Be relentless. Take classes, read books, and attend seminars. There is so much to be learned from the people around you. This industry is filled with individuals eager to share their knowledge, so take advantage of their wisdom. Stop waiting to feel ready for the next big job, promotion, etc. Be decisive and hard working. Pick yourself up when you fail, forgive yourself for not being perfect, and keep moving forward.

Lindsay Roy, Project Coordinator

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

I am a very hands-on type of person. I love problem-solving and the sense of accomplishment after a project has been completed. These are my driving forces, along with cost impacts and revenue.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Have confidence in yourself. Navigating a male-dominated industry can be hard, but don’t be afraid to ask questions and go outside of your comfort zone!
