For Women in Construction Week, March 5-11, 2023, we are recognizing some of the women working on project teams in the Philadelphia region’s construction industry. These women and their companies are changing the Philadelphia region, both its physical and cultural landscapes.

This week, we’re spotlighting women from Torcon, Inc.

Bailey Allmond, Project Engineer II

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

I am constantly learning new things. I get to work with subcontractors, engineers and designers who are experts in their trade and are always willing to share their knowledge with you. The construction industry and technology are always evolving which makes each day exciting and rewarding.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Leave your ego behind, but never underestimate your abilities. It is impossible to know everything, and you must be willing to learn and accept help. Do not be afraid to speak up in fear that you might be wrong. At the end of the day, getting involved will only build your confidence.

Jackie Harris, Lead Estimator

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

There are no two projects exactly alike and each day has its own set of challenges. I’m constantly learning and growing, which is what I love the most.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Ask questions and be adaptable! It’s better to ask a question when you need to, rather than wait for something to turn out incorrectly. When you’re uncomfortable, that means you’re learning.

Alyssa Killian, Estimator

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

My favorite part of the construction industry is the people. Regardless of our individual roles, whether it’s drawing the first sketch, finalizing the budget, or hammering the last nail, there is a unique sense of comradery that develops over the course of each project. The construction industry has introduced me to some of the most talented, compassionate, and hard-working people I’ve ever known.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Put in the work and know your worth. Especially as a woman working in a male-dominated industry, learn to uphold an unwavering level of confidence in your abilities, experience, and value. Know that no seat you earn at the table can ever be questioned.

Jaime McGeehan, Senior Project Manager

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

I love that it keeps you on your toes. There is always something new to learn. Each project has its own uniqueness. I also enjoy that we construct/build projects that impact others. This is one of Torcon’s core values: Build meaningful projects that make a fundamental difference.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Be open to learning from everyone: Owners, tradesmen, architects, engineers, etc. Each one can teach you something that you aren’t expecting. People are more willing to help you if you show that you genuinely care and are interested in the work they are performing.
