For Women in Construction Week, March 5-11, 2023, we are recognizing some of the women working on project teams in the Philadelphia region’s construction industry. These women and their companies are changing the Philadelphia region, both its physical and cultural landscapes.

This week, we’re spotlighting women from Turner Construction Company.

Kate Flint, Engineer

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

I’ve always been interested in sustainability and have a degree in Environmental Engineering. When I learned how much the built environment contributes to global warming, I saw an opportunity to help the planet. Seeing the strides we’ve made towards more sustainable jobsites in the last few years, I’m optimistic about where we’re headed.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

See as much as you can. Go on jobsite tours, intern, reach out to people in the industry and ask them what it’s like. The more you see, and the more people you can talk to, the more prepared you’ll be. We had a female GC working on a project at my high school and she came to speak to our class about what she does. That was my first introduction to construction, and it sparked my curiosity to learn more.

Ruisa Hinds, Const Analyst

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

It’s rewarding to see drawings turn into reality over the life of each project. With each job, we’re able to make clients happy and have a positive impact on our communities.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Always be curious, about your work and about others. Develop genuine relationships – these people will be a great source of advice and support throughout your career. Ask questions, especially to the tradespeople as they are the experts in their fields. And lastly, don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone, always seek out opportunities for growth.

Laura McNeill, Engineer

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

I really enjoy how collaborative the industry is. On any given day, I’m problem solving with subcontractors, design teams, and clients – often all together. Each successful project is a team effort.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Spend as much time and effort on building relationships as you do technical knowledge. Boats don’t move forward unless everyone paddles!

Aisha Patel, Financial Engineer

What is one thing you love about working in the construction industry?

The people. Construction is a team effort, and no one person does it all. Every person brings a different view and experience, which aids in the success of the project. I get the opportunity to work with the owner, architect, consultants, subcontractors, etc. Together, we overcome obstacles and hurdles as one team.

What advice do you have for women interested in a career in construction?

Don’t be afraid to speak up. When joining the industry, it can be quite intimidating and overwhelming, but you will learn quickly that the industry is filled with those who are experts in their field. They genuinely love to take the time to help and walk you through all your questions. Take advantage of working with professionals and don’t be afraid to raise your hand and ask for help when needed.
