On Saturday, November 8, the Philadelphia chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) hosted its annual Block Kids competition at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 19 Hall, welcoming more than 150 students in grades 1–6 for a morning of hands-on discovery. GBCA was proud to sponsor the event and present one of the grade-level awards.
Block Kids is a national program that introduces young students to the construction industry through creative, project-based play. Each participant receives Lego-style blocks and a small selection of materials—such as string, foil, or a rock—and has one hour to design and build a construction-related structure. Local winners move on to regional and potentially national competition.
This event continues to be an exciting way to spark interest in construction careers early, encouraging students to imagine, build, and explore the world around them.
