On May 26, Paul McLaughlin, Manager of Continuous Improvement for the Butz Family of Companies (and based out of the Shoemaker Construction Co. offices), and GBCA Construction Leadership Council (CLC) Steering Committee member, spoke with Professor Jamie McDonald’s Productivity in Construction class in Drexel University’s Construction Management Program.

A graduate of Drexel University, Paul spoke about his experience moving up in a construction company with a focus on innovation in construction. Paul shared the importance of the connections he made during his co-op terms, specifically at Shoemaker Construction Co., his former classmates, and in professional organizations such as GBCA’s CLC. He stressed learning as much as you can, including the business side, which he is doing now as he earns his MBA at Drexel University. Paul also spent some time discussing lean construction principles as he’s applying them in the field, connecting ideas students have learned in the classroom with the real-world applications that they will soon be making.

In 2021, members of GBCA’s Construction Leadership Council are speaking with students in post-secondary programs in the Philadelphia region. These chats connect emerging construction professionals with students, providing information about what to expect after the students graduate, as well as real life tips that helped them make it as they move forward in their careers.
