On June 15, GBCA’s Construction Leadership Council (CLC) hosted a virtual Coffee Chat with Craig Sabatino, Principal & Co-Founder of INTECH Construction, LLC. The informal meeting, hosted by CLC Officer Andrew Baumgardner of Guthrie Glass & Metal, Inc., provided GBCA’s young and emerging construction professionals an opportunity to hear from an experienced construction executive, and to ask questions about working in Philadelphia’s commercial construction industry.

Craig shared his journey into the construction industry, from learning on the job, gaining insights from every job he held, to working with business partners who were different from him and who complemented his own skillset.

Some highlights:

  • Three lessons he learned from his father about running a construction business:
    • You’ve got to have work.
    • The work needs to be profitable.
    • You need to get paid.
  • The best “marketing” for his company is the company’s reputation. It’s important to have repeat business, since those clients will talk to other potential clients.
  • Relationships are vital in business. Good and strong relationships can help with keep things going when mistakes or problems come up. Form relationships with your subcontractors, staff and partners, customers, and even your competitors.
  • Anyone can give reports on a situation, but the ability to plan—to create a solution—is what is special and sets people apart.
