Students Discover Careers in Construction at Build My Future 2025

On October 8 and 9, hundreds of students from across the Philadelphia region gathered for GBCA’s Build My Future event—an interactive two-day showcase designed to introduce young people to rewarding careers in the construction industry.

Held at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 19, the event featured a diverse lineup of exhibitors offering hands-on activities, live demonstrations, and career insights that highlighted the many opportunities available in the union construction industry.

Students rotated through interactive exhibits where they learned about tools, safety equipment, and construction processes directly from industry professionals. Demonstrations included CPR training, electrical hazard simulations, scaffolding and safety displays, and even a smoldering demonstration—giving participants a first-hand look at the technical skill, safety standards, and teamwork behind every trade.

Exhibitors shared information about apprenticeships, training programs, and career pathways, helping students envision how they could build their own futures in construction.

Special guests Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson (October 8) and State Senator Joe Picozzi (October 9) addressed attendees, underscoring the importance of the construction trades to Philadelphia’s growth and economy. Both encouraged students to visit every exhibit, ask questions, and take full advantage of opportunities that could lead to fulfilling, lifelong careers.

Adding to the excitement, Mayfair Middle School recorded a live episode of their Dope Student Podcast during the event, interviewing students, exhibitors, volunteers, and elected officials about their experiences and what they learned.
