The University of Pennsylvania’s Pennovation Works is building the Pennovation Lab, a 70,000 square foot lab and office space for Philadelphia’s innovators. These 2,000 – 12,000 square feet modules will provide lab tenants access to an innovative and growing community on the Pennovation Works campus.

The building is being built by INTECH Construction. Brightline Construction and Superior Scaffold Services recently performed some shoring of the existing 4-story structure.

From Superior Scaffold Services:

Some of the concrete columns and box beams had become compromised over the years and needed attention. … We used our whole compliment of shoring options. Depending on the application, we used our post shores, 20 kip shores, 2′ wide high load frames, 4′ wide high load frames and needle beams.

The most challenging aspect was shoring the beams near the corner columns. We had to install 4′ wide high load frames on the inside of the building on each floor and on the outside of the building from grade up to the top floor and use needle beams from inside tower to outside tower, at each floor to support box beams.
