Every year, as a celebration of Turner Construction Company’s founding on May 3, volunteers from around the world roll up their sleeves and get together to participate in community service projects. By partnering with local and global organizations, Turner’s employees strive to make a difference in the communities where they live, work, learn, and grow. This company-wide day of service connects Turner’s people around the globe, creates new relationship building opportunities, and reinforces the core values upon which Turner was founded: teamwork, integrity, and commitment.

For Founders’ Day 2019, Turner Construction Company’s Philadelphia Office partnered with 8 local organizations on May 2, 3, and 4:

  • Attic Youth Center
  • Cradles to Crayons
  • Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail
  • PCA Cares – Marconi Older Adult Center
  • Ronald McDonald House Philadelphia
  • Salvation Army
  • Veterans Multi-Service Center
  • William Way LGBT Community Center

Attic Youth Center

The Attic Youth Center creates opportunities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults within a safe and supportive community, and promotes the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society. On May 2, Turner created a Chipotle assembly line of rice, beans, meat, and cheeses ready to create burrito bowls. There were a wide variety of Burritos: Chicken, Steak, Sofritas, Veggie, Carnetas, and Barbacoa. Seven Turner team members worked seamlessly behind the line helping each person select there meal. Everyone was very thankful and enjoyed coming back for seconds.

Cradles to Crayons

Cradles to Crayons works to empower children by providing the everyday essentials that match their individual needs. Turner volunteer’s sorted and packed various items in the children’s clothing section, baby room section, shoes section, toys shop, library section, school supply section, and shopping section. These items will be sent to children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play.

Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail

The Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail (FOCHT), was founded in 2008 by a group of dedicated volunteers committed to supporting the construction of the Trail. Currently, the Friends focus on supporting the volunteer efforts in beautifying the park. Turner volunteers spent the morning cleaning the Bala Cynwyd Heritage Trail. Volunteers worked hard weeding all the beds and spreading mulch along the trail.

PCA Cares – Marconi Older Adult Center

Serving families in South Philadelphia, the Marconi provides a wide range of activities for older adults 55+ including recreation, athletics, meals, trips and a variety of social services. The Marconi Older Adult Program focuses on providing a warm and inviting atmosphere for making friends and participating in activities that help older adults maintain their independence. Turner volunteers spent their morning painting a computer lab in the center.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army exists to meet human need wherever, whenever, and however they can. They offer local programs to the local community, working to optimize their efficacy via spiritual, physical, and emotional service. Turner volunteers arrived at 7 AM and served breakfast and lunch. They cleaned the entire building, organized the food pantry, and assisted shoppers who came to the food pantry to get their groceries. In the afternoon, 21,000 lbs. of potatoes were delivered to the Salvation Army. Volunteers successfully transported the ten pallets of potatoes from the truck to the food pantry.

Ronald McDonald House Philadelphia’s Plane Pull

The Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House supports families of seriously ill children by creating a community of comfort and hope. On May 4, a team of 20 staff, family, and friends had a blast participating in the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House Plane Pull! The Plane Pull is a competition and fundraising event that gives organizations from across the Philadelphia area the chance to see which of them can pull an airplane in the fastest time.

Veterans Multi-Service Center

The Veterans Multi-Service Center provides services, programs, opportunities and advancement to Veterans of the U.S. military and their families. Turner volunteers spent quality time with our country’s veterans at the Veteran Services Center in Philadelphia. The volunteers brought fun and excitement hosting a competitive game of Bingo and showed our respect and appreciation by serving lunch. They even got the chance to join in their weekly Spades games. Overall, this successful event was as impactful for Turner’s volunteers as they hope it was for the veterans.

William Way LGBT Community Center

The William Way Community Center encourages, supports, and advocates for the well-being and acceptance of sexual and gender minorities in the Greater Philadelphia region through service, recreational, educational, and cultural programming.
