On Tuesday, March 3, as part of Women in Construction (WIC) Week 2020, the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Philadelphia Chapter 145 toured Penn Medicine’s Pavilion project. The Pavilion project is an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) project, with primary construction management performed by LF Driscoll and Balfour Beatty US in a joint venture.

Led primarily by women on the project team from Southland Industries, the tour highlighted the project’s design innovations, as well as the construction challenges and solutions that the project team encountered.

Following the tour, attendees had a lunch and discussion with some of the women in the trades working on the project. Issues discussed included how the industry has changed for women in the last few decades, the importance of increasing women’s visibility in the construction industry, and the value of apprenticeships to train all workers—including women—to produce the best work.
