A new survey by DeWalt Industrial Tool Co, Gen Z in the Skilled Trades, reveals strong enthusiasm among Gen Z for careers in the skilled trades, with 68% of respondents fully committed to their chosen paths despite significant hurdles. Among the challenges cited were training waitlists (52%) and the cost of education (43%). However, hands-on experiences like internships (55%) keep this generation optimistic, with 84% anticipating immediate employment upon completing their training.

Key Findings from the Survey

According to HBSDealer.com, several barriers hinder Gen Z’s access to skilled trades:

• Cost of trade school: 43% see this as a significant obstacle.
• Networking opportunities: 39% report difficulty finding industry connections.
• Time constraints: 35% struggle to balance classwork with other commitments.
• Access to tools and equipment: 33% say a lack of resources affects their training success.

Generational Expectations in the Workplace

Once Gen Z enters full-time positions, they are likely to face another set of challenges, particularly generational differences in workplace values. Unlike Baby Boomers and Gen X managers, Gen Z prioritizes work-life balance (85%) and a caring boss (79%) as critical aspects of a job. These priorities reflect a shift from traditional expectations and may require businesses to adapt to attract and retain this new generation of skilled workers.
